WorldRoots Voiceis now in its sixth year as Bristol's foremost
world music youth
acappella ensemble
and is directed
by Hannah Klewin.
This group of young people, all now highly
experienced singers and performers aged between 12 and 22, has steadily risen in
profile and professionalism to become inspirational examples and ambassadors of
Bristol's creativity, capacity and achievement. They are also significant,
influential role models for affirmative values and positive citizenship to other
children, young people and adults across the city.
WorldRoots exemplifies many of the
positive aspects that any group, irrespective of age, style or culture, should
aspire to. They are a hardworking,
enthusiastic and committed group of young people
who consistently deliver high
quality performances and
inspire great affection and
respect whenever they sing. They
were
both the
inspiration
and
strategic model
for the Gathering Voices
project.
WorldRoots
Voice ranges in age
from
12 to 22, a quarter of whom are male. New members are able to join at the beginning of each term and rehearsals
are over a
ten week term and are weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to
8.30pm in Clifton,
Bristol.
The repertoire is an
eclectic mix of multi-cultural and fusion vocal music. All songs are in
three and four part harmony and are
learnt by ear.
There is no requirement to read music and no formal audition process. Younger
singers, aged 8-11, can join
NewRoots.
Although
WorldRoots
is open access, places are highly prized and a sustained level
of punctuality, attention, commitment and enthusiasm is expected from each
singer. In our experience what is put in is received back many fold. (Attendance
exceptions
are made during illness, GCSE and A Level exam times).
On occasions WorldRoots
singers are also invited to work alongside other WorldBeats
musicians in an amplified band setting in our Soul Park Collective Sessions. This provides
the opportunity to use microphones and a PA and work alongside a five
piece band. We also host occasional informal gigs where budding teenage
singer-songwriters have the opportunity to perform live. These sessions are very different from the usual unaccompanied
form of singing that is the hallmark of
WorldRoots
and are a valuable learning experience for any vocalist considering performing
solo or forming a band.
WorldRoots
has recorded a 12 track CD at the Gasworks
Studio in Bristol, which is available to buy - please contact us for details.
